The Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea are the source of this coffee, and the Highlands Organic Agriculture Cooperative is in charge of a cooperative group that includes nearly 3,000 smallholder farmers there. The group’s goals include enhancing the region’s infrastructure and roads, providing desks and supplies for the 20 local primary schools in the Purosa and Okapa areas, beds and mattresses for the neighbourhood hospitals, and assistance to women’s organisations. Moreover, the high quality and rich, full-bodied flavour of this coffee are a result of its cultivation at elevations between 4,000 and 6,000 feet above sea level. Transporting fertilisers and pesticides is also complicated by the fact that the majority of the coffee-growing regions are forested and nearly inaccessible.
